Does having OCD/Asperger Syndrome negatively impact University applications?

I’m sure that’d be illegal under the Disability Discrimination act, but as I’m sure we all know, the Law and actual in practice occurences are two different worlds. So, does anybody know in reality?

Are they asking you? Don’t volunteer information if they aren’t asking. That said, once accepted, you can request additional time to complete tests due to your OCD. I have OCD and I graduated from a well respected college, albeit with much difficulty. Don’t be afraid to ask for the additional test time if you need it. You will need a letter from your psych doc.

Good Luck!

Before you apply to college, contact your local OVR. ASk your High School or college for the number or look in the blue pages. OVR will make accommodations for you, based on your special needs AND they will pay for tuition, textbooks, etc., as well as help with job placement. Good Luck.

Well like you said, it is illegal for them to look at your application in a negative way because of it. So, in that case no. But the question is do you need to tell them?

No,you will actually get all the help you may need .they have counsellors and people who take care of students with any sort of disability . Sorry having a senior moment and can’t think what they are called :-) You will get help if you need special equipment extra finance if needed.
I was a disabled mature student and found them very helpful .

For most subjects no. They may be a bit worried about you studying medicine, psychology, and some of the vocational courses for professions allied to medicine. This is because interpersonal skills are a big component of the professional part of these vocational courses and by definition someone with Aspergers has problems with some interpersonal skills. OCD may also have implications for clinical practice.

For other subjects then they should support you through any difficulties your conditions cause, all universities have a member of staff responsible for students with special needs and you should make contact with them as early as possible so that your needs can be considered, bring a copy of your statement of special needs which you had at school. But, if they are going to help you then you need to be honest with them.
