What can I do to actually get into a top university in 2011?

What sorts of things will impress universities and ensure I get more than one or no offers? I have lots of work experience, good grades and have a sufficient attendance and punctuality track record. Is this enough?

Can people tell me how they did or didn’t get into university and why.University application stories please. Thanks so much By the way, I want to go to a university in the UK.

Something that’s completely vital, apart from grades of course, is your personal statement. Writing this will take up a lot of time (it took me ages to do) but once it’s done it will make a huge difference to your chances of going to the University you want.

Think of it as the only information the Universitites have about your life outside school, so write about achievements that you might have done that will put you above other students, for example managing a project or working as a team on something.

Also, make sure you get lots of different teachers to read through it. I got my English, Art, French, General Studies teacher and my Head of Year to read through mine so I could get as much feedback as I could to take on board. Even if you dont do English as an A Level, I would definatley ask the Head of Department to look over it because they are most likely to know what to write and can really help.

Finally, make sure you say how the other subjects you have studied have influenced what you want to study at Univeristy and how they have given you additional insight into your chosen subject.

I did a Sport course at (UK) college, but now i would like to do psychology at University, but how? Considering i have already done a course at college how am i going to get on the course? I am considered a mature student now, so i don’t want to waste time with more studying.

Without the entry qualifications you won’t get into uni. An alternative to A-levels is an Access course. They take one year & are A-level equivalent. http://www.accesstohe.ac.uk/ You may see another year of study as a waste of time but if you are that keen to get to uni you will do whatever it takes to get there.

Which is the best University in Canada for Biological Science and Medicine?

I want to go to Canada for University. I have been looking up the canadian universities and was wandering which one of them are better for undergrade biology McGill or University of Toronto and Medicine McGill of University of Toronto?

McGill was ranked as the Top University in Canada for medicine. However, its really hard to get into. Out of 200 spots, only 20 are for non-Canadians. Apparently, to get into med-school at UofT its a coin toss. When it comes to biology, both universities I’m sure have great bio departments. I’m a University of Toronto student (St. George campus) so I’d go with UofT. Make sure you’re going to St. George though, because if you end up at the Scarborough campus or the Mississauga campus then they both suck.

Is California Polytechnic State University- Pomona a good university for a student aspiring to become a vet?

I would probably major in animal sciences or something like that. Is this field of study at this University good or well-known to veterinary schools? Also what other universities would be good for someone who wants to go to vet school? I also am considering UC-Davis, but that is way farther than Cal Poly Pomona. What would you recommend?

Are you kidding? Cal Poly Pomona is one of the best universities in California for that major. UC Davis is probably the best in the country and therefore you’ll need a 4.2 and a 1500/1600 on your SATs to go there. If you can’t get into UCD, CPP is your next best bet. They’ve got great facilities including the world famous Kellogg Arabian Horse Center. In case you haven’t also heard, the W.K. Kellogg foundation just gifted $42 million dollars to the school, the largest such gift in the entire CSU system ever. You may also consider Cal Poly SLO, but only Pomona also offer a zoology option. Cal Poly emphasizes hands on learning, so you’ll get plenty of labs working with real animals, and you won’t be learning just from books. Visit their website and visit the school. Look for the Sunday horse show, conducted the first Sunday of most months and is conducted mostly by Cal Poly Pomona students. Good luck!!

I have sent an application to defer my admission in waterloo University.what are the chances?

I have recently been accepted in University of waterloo for MEng Program for fall 2010.
Actually the visa process in my country takes some time therefore i have sent an application to defer my admission to WINTER 2011. What are the chances of my deferral as i have a solid reason of not being able to attend University for fall 2011.

Why is "Hispanic/Latino" separated from other ethnicities on university applications?

This is not a rhetorical question, just really curious why there would be two separate questions regarding ethnicity on all University Applications I’ve seen recently. The questions are in this order:

1. Are you of Hispanic or Latino origin?

2. What is your ethnicity?
-white
-black
-asian
..etc

I’m curious whether this is advantageous or disadvantageous toward Hispanics/Latinos. It just struck me as incredibly un-American.

I can’t speak for every country, but here in the U.S. people care way too much about race/ethnicity. Some universities like to say how diverse they are and show the statistics. Also there is that whole equal opportunity education thing so that may be part of it. I don’t know if it would be advantageous or not.

Assuming you apply as a junior transfer (for the final two years), maintain a good GPA (3.8 or above) and you do a lot of volunteer work and ECs. You were a B student in high school.

Is it possible to transfer from a tier 4 or tier 3 school to a top 50 University like Georgetown, Washington U in St Louis or Vanderbilt?

It really depends on there you’re from and what course program you’re after. Since you haven’t desided on where to study yet, I suggest you take a look over here:

If a student manages to get into a top university as a transfer student, what does it tell you about him?

Lets say a student did so so in high school due to difficulties in life, but in college he shined and did outstanding, so well that he applied to a Top Univ University for his final two years of college, if he gets accepted, what does that tell you about the student?

Also, do transfer students at top universities have less opportunities than the ones who have been there for a while?

No, they both have the same opportunities. Your resume and transcript will not say community college. You will only have your bachelor degree granting institution. You only suffer socially in college as a transfer student. You meet most of your friends in freshman and sophomore years because you take generals etc. The final two years are your major’s coursework. You can still make friends this way though.
